  Introduction and about the Book:

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is one of the best thrillers out there. No wonder it was later adapted into a film by the same name. Masterpiece! It has a very thrilling suspense and twists throughout the book. It unravels deep layers of human psychology and emotions, depicting how childhood trauma or growing up environment plays a major in shaping up the very nature of a person.

It also touches on the ups and downs of the institution of marriage and beautifully quoted in the book, “Friends see most of each other’s flaws. Spouses see every awful last bit.”

The plot of the Book:

Nick and Amy meet in New York, fall in love (was it really love?) and get married. After three years of their marriage, both lose their jobs and move to Missouri, Nick’s hometown, much against Amy’s will. His mother is battling cancer and Amy, though skeptical, supports her. Nick’s terms with his father are strained.

Nick owns a bar named “The Bar” with his twin sister, Go, by borrowing money from Amy’s leftover savings. Amy is no longer working.

Every year, on their anniversary she plays a treasure hunt game with Nick on the guessing end to reach the gift.

But on their fifth anniversary, there is a twist. Amy is nowhere found though she has left treasure hunt notes. There are so many evidences that point towards Nick behind her disappearance and him hiding some facts from the Police makes the situation against him even more strong. Of course, there is media trial as well.

In the course of time, it is also found that Amy bought a gun and was pregnant, Nick had an extra-marital affair and there is a diary…are all these even true? Is Nick really the culprit or is someone from Amy’s past taking a revenge or is there another mastermind behind all this? There is a lot more to it than meets the eye so grab the book to find more.

Characters:

  • Lance Nicholas Dunne – Nick, the husband, mid 30s, is a writer from Missouri, settled in New York. He writes about TV, books, movies in magazines. After losing his job, he moves back to Missouri with his wife, Amy, and runs The Bar with his twin, Go.
  • Amy Elliott Dunne – Amy, the wife, the “Gone Girl”, late 30s and is the only child of Rand and Marybeth Elliott born after multiple miscarriages. She is married to Nick Dunne and worked writing quizzes for magazines before the layoffs. In her personal diary, we come across many quizzes when facing personal situations.
  • Margo Dunne – Go, Nick’s sister also lost her job and is back to Missouri. She is Nick’s biggest support system and go-to person. When strange items are found at her place, she also becomes a suspect along Nick.
  • Rand and Marybeth Elliott – Amy’s parents. Rich. Published a very famous “Amazing Amy” book. Right from childhood, they expect Amy to behave and act just as the fictional character they created, which is one of the reasons for Amy’s weird character.

What starts off as a usual love turned loveless marriage story is actually an intense thriller-suspense-mystery story. At one point, you will relate to Amy’s narration and at another point, you will sympathize with Nick or Andie.
