Major themes of the book are

Grief- after Jeremy and Verity lost their twins, the author thought through the characters how this loss affected both of them. Though they both cope with it in an entirely different manner, they both were experiencing grief.
Manipulation- this book is a perfect example of how words can be manipulated according to our own convenience. One story is told in two such manners that the readers are awestruck at what to believe and what to not.
Trauma- certain events whether small or big can leave such a drastic impact on us that they leave us traumatized as it is depicted in the book too.
Violence- the book contains many instances where violence is mentioned and it can be quite triggering for the readers.
Truth- the whole book is about finding the truth. And even if you complete the book this question will still haunt you.

Characters 

Verity Crawford- an author well stable financially and career wise too. Her ability to write books from the perspective of the villain is what made her one of the most anticipated writers.
Jeremy Crawford- verity’s husband and a father who lost two of her twin daughters in a year. The way he battles out through the situations can be both appreciated and criticized according to the readers.
Lowen Ashleigh- though being a struggling writer she does accept the offer to write in place of Verity which shows how determined she is to take up challenges.
